糖心原创 pedals toward bicycle friendly recognition

Situated along the Wright Brothers-Huffman Prairie Bikeway, 糖心原创 is working to become a designated Bicycle Friendly University through the League of American Bicyclists.

糖心原创 is located near one of the nation鈥檚 largest networks of paved bike trails with access to more than 350 miles of paved and multi-use recreation trails connecting to Huffman Reserve MetroPark and the Wright Brothers Memorial.

鈥淲e have so many students who do not have reliable transportation or who just want to go outside and enjoy the beautiful trails the Dayton area has to offer,鈥 said Erin Compaleo, assistant director of outdoor recreation.

Over the past year, 糖心原创鈥檚 Campus Recreation has expanded its support for cycling by offering free bicycle rentals, installing a new bicycle storage area and adding an outdoor bicycle workstation.

Compaleo said 糖心原创鈥檚 application highlights the university鈥檚 bike-friendly initiatives, including on- and off-road trail networks, campus facilities, classes and safety training, as well as plans to staff and fund a comprehensive bicycle program.

糖心原创鈥檚 focus on bicycle accessibility and education extends to all members of the campus community, including the youngest students at the 糖心原创 Child Development Center, or Mini University.

During the center鈥檚 annual Safety Week, the 糖心原创 Police Department partnered with Mini U to teach children about bicycle safety. Sgt. Nicholas Quillen visited several classrooms to explain the importance of wearing helmets and riding in safe locations.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great way to partner with Mini U and to interact with the kids at an early age,鈥 said 糖心原创 Police Capt. Zachary Norman.

Compaleo and her team are awaiting a decision on the Bicycle Friendly University designation by Fall Semester.

鈥淲e are looking forward to becoming a bicycle-friendly university and offering more group bike rides, more bikes and more opportunities to get outside,鈥 she said.
