One of the programs in this in itiative is the ā€œGrand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP)ā€ which is a comb ined curricular\, co-curricular\, and extra-curricular program with five c ompetencies that are designed to prepare the next generation of students f or addressing these challenges. He served as director of ASU’s Grand Ch allenge Scholars program from 2009 to 2013 and later a member of the Human itarian engineering faculty. He was awarded the Jefferson Science Fellowsh ip in 2013 to serve as a senior science and technology advisor to the Offi ce of the US Secretary of State\, where he helped guide US’s international relations through the lens of ā€œengineering for sustainable developmentā€ a nd provided intellectual\, technical and strategic leadership on policies and priorities in the areas of health\, education\, energy\, infrastructur e\, economic growth and governance.
