The exhibition includes work from several different serie s\, including The Testament Project\, an exploration of the contemporary B lack experience in America. 聽鈥淢ore often than not\,鈥 Graves says\, 鈥淏lack people are portrayed in the extreme鈥攅ither as very rich or very poor\, the y are demonized\, infantilized\, ridiculed\, idolized or hyper-sexualized\ ; and within the art canon there is a noticeable scarcity of Black represe ntation.鈥 In this vibrant series\, subjects of Graves鈥 portraits are empow ered through their active participation. Arranging the richly hued portrai ts in a grid\, Graves describes these photographs as emphasizing the indiv iduality of the subjects in addition to their blackness. This also creates a space for the viewer to reflect on the depth of racism in America.聽\n\n Based in New York and London\, Graves has been published and exhibited glo bally\, including the National Portrait Gallery in London\, and Aperture G allery\, New York\, among others.
