Faculty听 governance听 is听 a听 crucial听 component听 of听 the听 shared听 responsibility听 for听 decision-颅making听 by听 all听 institutional听 constituencies.听 It听 is听 a听 central听 value听 of听 American听 higher听 education.听 At听 Wright 听State听 University听 faculty听 governance听 is听 grounded听 in听 the听 founding听 of听 the听 university,听 beginning听 with听 the听 establishment听 of听 Academic听 Council听 in听 1966.听 In听 the听 early听 years听 governance听 also听 included听 quarterly听 General听 Faculty听 Meetings.听 Academic听 Council听 evolved听 into听 Faculty听 Senate听 in听 June听 1997听 and听 General听 Faculty听 Meetings听 were听 eliminated听 in听 May听 2005听 when听 faculty听 approved听 a听 revised听 Faculty听 Constitution.听 A听 general听 meeting听 of听 the听 university听 faculty听 may听 be听 called听 at听 need听 by听 the听 Senate.

Section 1. Powers and Duties

1. The University Faculty, in consultation with the University President and the University Provost, shall formulate codes of operating procedures governing all aspects of the academic program, admissions, academic standards, student affairs, faculty affairs not covered by the bargaining agreement, and other fields of university operation composed of academic and professional subject matter. The University President shall present such recommended operating procedures to the Board of Trustees for their consideration, amendment, confirmation, or rejection.
2. The University Faculty shall determine the curricula leading to all degrees and certification programs offered by the university and shall determine the content of all courses in such curricula.
3. The University Faculty shall determine the requirements for each degree offered by the university.
4. The University Faculty shall make recommendations to the University President or Provost and to the AAUP-WSU concerning the annual academic calendar of the university.
5. The University Faculty shall nominate all students to whom degrees shall be granted. Such nominations shall be submitted to the Board of Trustees through the University President.
6. The University Faculty can:
   1. Initiate and consider policy proposals and express its judgment on those policy proposals submitted to it by the University President or officers of the various academic divisions of the university;
   2. Investigate, discuss, and make recommendations to any appropriate body within the university regarding any matter of interest to the university;
   3. Request information through appropriate channels from any member of the university.

The听 Faculty听 Senate听 conducts听 monthly听 meetings听 to听 carry听 out听 business听 pertaining听 to听 shared听 governance.听 These听 meetings听 are听 conducted听 according听 to听 Robert鈥檚听 Rules听 of听 Order.听 Faculty听 Senate听 has听 numerous听 standing,听 administrative听 and听 ad听 hoc听 committees听 which听 consider听 and听 create听 policy,听 approve听 curricula,听 and听 make听 recommendations听 on听 other听 aspects听 of听 university听 operations.听 A听 complete听 listing听 of听 Senate听 committees听 and听 their听 responsibilities听 can听 be听 found听 on听 the听 Faculty听 Senate听 website.

Each听 college听 is听 proportionally听 represented听 by听 elected听 Senators听 based听 on听 the听 number听 of听 fully-affiliated听 faculty听 in听 the听 college.听 The听 Faculty听 Constitution听 governs听 eligibility听 to听 serve,听 terms听 of听 office,听 and听 conduct听 of听 elections.听 By听 electing听 Senators,听 you听 are听 putting听 your听 trust听 in听 them听 to听 represent听 your听 college.听 Senators听 should听 report听 back听 to听 their听 constituents听 on听 Senate听 activities,听 seek听 input听 on听 decision-颅making听 and听 listen听 to听 your听 concerns听 regarding听 matters听 under听 the听 Senate鈥檚听 purview.

Your听 department听 and听 college听 have听 committees听 that听 may听 be听 similar听 to,听 but听 are听 not听 affiliated听 with,听 the听 committees听 of听 Faculty听 Senate听 (University/Senate听 Committees).听听听 Department听 and听 college听 committees听 operate听 independently听 of听 the听 Senate听 but听 forward听 their听 business听 to听 the听 appropriate听 university听 committee听 for听 review听 and听 approval听 by听 the听 Faculty听 Senate听 or听 its听 delegate.听听

The was first created in 1968 as a governing document for faculty.听 The Faculty Constitution undergoes quadrennial review, and academic policies are reviewed at minimum every five years. The Faculty Constitution is also part of which cover all aspects of university operations. Each year, in mid-颅spring semester, the Faculty Office invites faculty members to indicate their willingness to serve on Senate standing committees by noting their first, second, and third choices on a list provided, and returning it to the Faculty Office. Faculty may also indicate willingness to serve on ad hoc committees as needed.

After the results of those committee preference responses have been tabulated, the
Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate meets to fill all committee appointments. The Executive Committee member from each college has the responsibility of selecting representatives to each committee from his/her constituency. Filling out a form does not guarantee that you will represent your college on a University committee.
