糖心原创 named to Best for Vets list

Military Times has named 糖心原创 to its Best for Vets: Colleges 2017 rankings. It is latest in a series of accolades and designations for 糖心原创 that have praised how the university serves veteran and military students and their connected families.

Seth Gordon, director of 糖心原创鈥檚 Veteran and Military Center, said 糖心原创鈥檚 culture reflects a strong commitment to veterans, service members and their families.

鈥淭hese young men and women have done remarkable things in service to their country,鈥 said Gordon. 鈥淔or some of them, the sacrifice has required them to receive extra support while in school because, compared to others in their peer group, they have developed different needs. Having others around that understand their commitment and in many cases, sacrifice, is important.鈥

.聽For several years running G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education have honored the university by designating it military friendly.

The Military Times rankings factor in the results of a school-by-school survey of more than 500 institutions and their respective veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement. The survey asked colleges and universities to document an array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties and to describe aspects of veteran culture on campus.

糖心原创 serves about 750 veterans or military-connected students 鈥 service members, Guard and Reserve members and military dependents. 糖心原创 offers an array of resources to help those students transition to campus.

With over 1,800 square feet designated for them, military and veteran students benefit from a small computer lab, three private study rooms, a lounge area, kitchenette and 500-square-foot conference room that has become popular with nursing students.

鈥淲e have four full-time staff members and over a dozen student veterans on staff to support their fellow veterans success,鈥 said Gordon. 鈥淭he VMC motto is 鈥榃e are each other鈥檚 champion.鈥 The student veterans have formed a community and culture where they take care of each other.鈥

The VMC is considered a model for processing GI Bill benefits 鈥 something Gordon said is directly related to the efforts of Amanda Watkins, the center鈥檚 associate director, and Ty Lea Brewsaugh, VMC assistant director and certifying benefits official. The center processes $7.5 million in tuition benefits and related benefits a year for student veterans.

鈥淲e take the processing of GI Bill benefits seriously, and we really perform here,鈥 Gordon said. 鈥淭he people are the reason we鈥檙e so successful. Without those two people 鈥 Amanda and Ty 鈥 nothing that I do would matter. We鈥檙e recognized and named to lists like these because of them.鈥

In addition to the physical facilities, the VMC provides supplemental advising, peer mentorship through the PAVE program and career counseling. The university launched two new academic programs this year designed to support military and veteran students: an accelerated nursing program for former medics and corpsmen; and a Veteran Services minor for those who may want to work with veterans in the future.
