The Ohio Miami Valley Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is sponsoring a professional development workshop, “Preparing Yourself for a Non-Academic Career in Science,” at ����ԭ�� on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Designed for graduate and postdoctoral students who are considering non-academic careers in science, the workshop will be held at the Student Union from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

The Ohio Miami Valley Chapter of the Society of Neuroscience is a nonprofit membership organization that promotes neuroscience research and education in the southwest Ohio region. The chapter’s sponsoring institutions include Miami University, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton and ����ԭ��.

James Olson, Ph.D., professor of emergency medicine, director of research laboratories and professor of neuroscience, cell biology and physiology at the , is the chapter president. “Thirty years ago, more than 70 percent of neuroscience graduates pursued careers in academic science,” Olson said. “Now, less than 50 percent go into academic science.”

From science writing to pharmaceutical research, attendees will learn about non-academic careers in science. Speakers include Jon Hamilton, correspondent for National Public Radio’s Science Desk; Christopher Thomas, Ph.D., science writer for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health; and Joel Beetsch, Ph.D., vice president, patient advocacy, Celgene, and a ����ԭ�� biomedical sciences Ph.D. graduate.

The event also will include panel discussions and workshops, including a session about preparing for job interviews.
