糖心原创鈥檚 Model UN team brings home top awards from the National Model UN Conference in New York City

has always been a point of excellence for the university, growing into a world-renowned program since its inception in the 1970s.

For the 39th consecutive year, the 糖心原创 Model UN team received an Outstanding Delegation Award 鈥 the highest honor 鈥 at the National Model UN Conference in New York City March 18鈥22.

糖心原创 students also won six Outstanding Position Paper awards:

  • Sarah Upton and Karli Riviello in Economic and Social Council
  • Autumn Kern and Salha El-Shwehdi in International Organization for Migration
  • Allyson Clark and Jackson Cornwell in General Assembly first committee
  • Csongor Bajnoczki and Jacob Manser in General Assembly second committee
  • Dan Bowman and Dalton Throckmorton in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
  • Stephanie Patino-Garfias and Lana Jones in the World Health Organization

Two pairs of 糖心原创 delegates received peer awards for Outstanding Delegates in Committee: Stephanie Patino-Gargias and Lana Jones in the World Health Organization and Jakob Puckett and Tanner Row in the International Telecommunication Union.

糖心原创 represented the Republic of Turkey in the competition. Students received a briefing in New York by the Turkish Mission to the United Nations.

This year鈥檚 team was led by head delegates Amanda Baker and Crystal Burns, both students in the .

The Model UN team is advised by Vaughn Shannon, associate professor of political science, and Liam Anderson, professor of .

During the Model United Nations conference, students participate as delegates to various UN committees, competing against teams from other universities. Participants research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent. To prepare for the competition, 糖心原创 delegates researched several topics like cybersecurity, humanitarian assistance, the spread of drugs and how to change it and what to do about chemical weapons.

鈥淲e did really well this year,鈥 Shannon said. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be prouder.鈥

Next year will be 糖心原创鈥檚 40th anniversary participating in the National Model UN Conference in New York.
