Qualifications for All Positions

  • Currently enrolled 糖心原创听student (undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester they work; graduate students must register for a minimum of 3听credit hours each semester they work)
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Minimum GPA of 2.8; 3.0+ preferred
  • Must meet all Student Employment requirements


    Course-Based Tutor听

    Position Description

    Work individually or in small groups, traditionally and/or online, modeling appropriate study behavior and assisting students in areas of difficulty.

    Wage: $14.50/hr

    Work Study information is welcome but not required.

    Modern Language and Nursing applicants will need to obtain faculty approval for those courses. For students who have taken a course and earned an A or B at another institution but want to tutor that course at 糖心原创, they must obtain approval from a 糖心原创 faculty member who teaches that course. Applicants seeking approval to tutor specific courses will need to share the when requesting approval.

    Requirements

    • Minimum of 3.0 GPA to become a Tutor
    • Completed at least 6 credit hours at 糖心原创
    • Earned a grade of A or B in 糖心原创 courses to be tutored
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Access to technology needed to work remotely, including a reliable internet connection and a computer with a microphone and camera


    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Prepare for tutoring sessions
    • Use software programs, including Pilot and Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
    • Meet punctually and regularly
    • Provide support and encouragement
    • Respect confidentiality of sessions
    • Support instructor class objectives
    • Motivate your students
    • Maintain professional & academic nature of sessions
    • Help with study habits (note taking, time management, test prep)
    • Help clarify new information
    • Praise the student where possible and work to build a positive self-image
    • Build as much success for the student as possible at each meeting
    • Demonstrate problem-solving skills
    • Help students comprehend and translate reading of the text
    • Work flexible times around your classes
    • Help students troubleshoot technical issues within reason

    Front Desk Attendant

    Position Description

    Academic Success Center is looking for听undergraduate听students to join our Front Office Team. This position serves as the Academic Success Centers initial point of contact for students, staff and faculty, providing outstanding customer service, in person, by email, and on the phone in a busy office setting.

    Duties

    • Provide customer service to anyone who comes into the ASC
    • Answer phones and direct callers to the appropriate staff person.
    • Manage student tutoring, Writing, and peer academic coach sessions via Slate.
    • Adhere to FERPA guidelines when handling confidential materials.
    • Assist with orientations, open houses and other recruiting events.
    • Assist with special projects.
    • Attend staff meetings.
    • Complete other general office duties such as copying and emailing.
    • Assist in maintaining the ASC physical space.

    General Qualifications for the Position

    • Currently enrolled undergraduate student, registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours during each semester that they work at 糖心原创.
    • Must be in good standing with the university.
    • Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.80. However, a cumulative GPA above 3.0 is preferred.

    Specific Qualifications for the Position

    • Must be able to work on campus during breaks in the academic year (Department Operational Hours: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.鈥6 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.鈥4 p.m.).

    Knowledge/Skills

    • Ideal candidate will be dependable, reliable and professional with strong attention to detail

    Math Learning Center Tutor

    Position Description

    Math Learning Center (MLC) tutors provide individual and small group tutoring to students in first and second-year math courses. They also assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify mathematical learning problems and develop mathematical habits of mind. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, or working on solutions to problems. In general, the tutor will provide services that supplement classroom teaching.

    Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled at 糖心原创.
      • Undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 6 credit hours during each semester that they work.
      • Graduate students must register for a minimum of 3 credit hours during each semester that they work.
    • Must be in good standing with the university.听
    • Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.80. However, a cumulative GPA above 3.0 is preferred.
    • Course Requirements:
      • To tutor Mathematics: You must have received a grade of 鈥楢鈥 or 鈥楤鈥 in MTH 2300 or an equivalent Calculus-based course.
        • However, preference will be given to individuals who have completed the equivalent of MTH 2310 (Calculus 2) with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor STT 1600/2640: You must have completed STT 1600/2640, or an equivalent course in Statistics with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor MTH 2415/2435: You must have completed the course with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor MS 2040/2050:听You must have completed the course with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor CS 1200/2200 or MTH 2570:听You must have completed the course with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor CS 1160/1180/1181:听You must have completed the course with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
      • To tutor ISE 2211:听You must have completed the course with a grade of 鈥楤鈥 or higher.
    • Faculty reference that can comment on your mathematical/statistical/computational ability.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide 1-1 tutorial support in Mathematics and/or Statistics.
    • Prepare for tutoring sessions.
    • Follow-up with tutees鈥 progress by identifying and recording common problem areas.
    • Aid students with problem-solving strategies.
    • Attend workshops in order to obtain CRLA certification.
    • Maintain a weekly schedule of available hours within the Math Learning Center.
    • Attend semester orientations, MLC meetings, and tutor-training sessions as required by the Director.
    • Abide by and enforce the rules of the Academic Success Centers.
    • Ensure that students sign-in and properly check out materials of the Academic Success Centers.
    • Ensure that tutoring spaces are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion after each shift.
    • Facilitate the Math Learning Center鈥檚 calculator loan program.
    • Assist with additional duties as needed.


    Assignments/Pay

    • Paid tutors earn a minimum of $14.50 an hour for both individual and group tutoring.
    • Tutoring will be assigned according to student demand, tutor availability, and seniority.
    • Flexible schedule: Hours may vary with a maximum of 28 hours per week.

    Peer Academic Coach

    Position Description

    • Peer Academic Coaches听(PACSs) work individually听with students to cultivate the habits, attitudes, study skills, and self-advocacy practices of successful students.鈥
    • First Year Seminar Embedded Peer Academic Coaches听(FYS EPACs) work both in the FYS classroom and in the Academic Success Centers to provide academic and social support for students. They focus on study and executive functioning skills, transition to college, and self-advocacy practices.听
    • UVC Embedded Peer Academic Coaches听(UVC EPACs) work both in the UVC classroom and in the Academic Success Centers to provide academic and social support for students to develop key learning skills, enhance their confidence, and increase their independence.鈥 They focus on study and executive functioning skills and self-advocacy practices.听

    Qualifications

    • 听 General Qualifications听(all PAC positions)
      • Ability to effectively and independently manage time, tasks, and problems
      • Sensitivity, compassion, patience, and responsiveness to the learning needs of all students and ability to establish rapport
      • Knowledge of effective learning techniques: study strategies, learning styles, etc.
      • Familiarity with 糖心原创鈥檚 student resources, both physical and digital, including WINGS
      • Reputable behavior in accordance with the 糖心原创 Student Code of Conduct
    • 听 Specific Qualifications听听(all PAC position)
      • 2.8 cumulative GPA, 3.0 preferred
      • Minimum sophomore status or completion of听at least鈥12 Undergraduate credit hours at 糖心原创
      • Ability to communicate effectively
      • Attend training each semester
    • 听 For EPACs Only
      • UVC EPACs: Ability to attend an assigned section of UVC 1000 on a regular basis if assigned to an in-person section.
      • FYS EPACs: Ability to attend an assigned section of First Year Seminar on a regular basis.


    Duties and Responsibilities

    • 听 ALL PACs
      • Facilitate one-on-one Peer Academic Coaching sessions weekly.
      • Attend and participate in required training and staff meetings.
    • 听 UVC EPACs
      • Attend UVC 1000 courses weekly and provide support for UVC instructors.
      • Maintain weekly awareness of resources and course information, such as the UVC 1000 course curriculum and expectations, Academic Success Center program updates,听the University鈥檚 Academic Probation policies and processes, and University requirements and events.
    • 听 FYS EPACs
      • Attend First Year Seminar courses weekly and provide support for FYS instructors.
      • Maintain weekly awareness of resources and course information, such as the seminar course curriculum and expectations, Academic Success Center program updates,听and University requirements and events


    Assignments and Scheduling

    • Assignments: Peer Academic Coaches may work in either of the following ways:
      • On a shift-based system for drop-ins only. Shift Schedules are maintained throughout each term, and vary by staff availability.
      • By appointment only. Session attendance is required only if a student books an appointment.
      • A combination of drop-in availability and appointment-based availability, wherein a PAC may have a regular drop-in schedule and conduct appointments upon request.
    • Scheduling:
      • Peer Academic Coaches work between 1-15 hours per week, including open appointments and/or drop-ins.
      • FYS Peer Academic Coaches work between 3-10 hours per week, including 3 hours of class time, additional prep/instructor assistance, and open appointments/drop-ins.
      • UVC Peer Academic Coaches work between 1-6 hours per week, including 1 hour of class time, additional prep/instructor assistance, and open appointments/drop-ins.

    Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader

    Position Description

    Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders lead SI sessions outside of class lectures, attend class lectures and take notes, promote SI among students enrolled in class, and collaborate with faculty members to structure SI sessions.

    Work study information is welcome but not required. It is required that applicants get approval from the faculty member of the class they wish to be an SI Leader. Faculty must send an approval in order for your application to be considered complete.

    Qualifications

    • Earned a grade of A or B in the course being considered
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Recommendation or approval from a faculty member
    • Access to technology needed to work remotely, including a reliable internet connection and a computer with a microphone and camera

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Complete training and complete professional development hours/meetings each term.
    • Survey assigned class to identify 2 times to hold review sessions each week
    • Facilitate sessions weekly
    • Send weekly emails and reminders to students
    • Create and submit plans for each session
    • Meet regularly with instructor
    • Attend assigned class times and/or review online course materials
    • Follow policies/procedures and maintain communication with the SI Coordinator
    • Hold a weekly 鈥淪I Drop-in Hour鈥 to provide further assistance to students


    Assignments and Scheduling

    Assignments: SI Leaders work 9-10 hours per week supporting their approved course.

    Scheduling: The typical weekly schedule is: attend class (3 hours); hold 2 SI sessions per week (2 hours); prepare for sessions and stay in regular contact with the professor, the class, and the SI Coordinator (3 hours); hold a weekly SI Leader Drop-in hour (1 hr). Professional development team meetings are held over specific weeks of the term and SI Leaders work an additional 1 hour a week during that time.

    Writing Coach

    Position Description

    University Writing Center听Writing Coaches provide individual writing support to students. In-person and/or online, Writing Coaches use a discussion-based method of challenge and support to help students develop their skills as writers.

    Qualifications

    • Earned a grade of A or B in ENG 1100 or the equivalent
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Access to technology needed to work remotely, including a reliable internet connection and a computer with a microphone and camera

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Prepare for and conduct Writing Center sessions
    • Meet punctually and regularly, including weekly staff meetings
    • Provide support and encouragement
    • Respect confidentiality of sessions
    • Support course objectives
    • Motivate students
    • Maintain professional and academic nature of sessions
    • Demonstrate problem-solving skills
    • Participate in the development of workshops and training materials
    • Participate in outreach activities, e.g. presenting information regarding academic support available through the University
    • Maintain a weekly schedule of available hours


    Assignments and Scheduling

    • Assignments: Writing Coaches work on a shift-based system. Shift Schedules are maintained throughout each term, and vary by staff availability. All Writing Coaches offer a combination of drop-in sessions and appointments.
    • Flexible scheduling: Hours may vary between 5-25 hours per week, including a weekly paid staff meeting.
